Situated in the "Heart of Florida's Gold Coast," the city of Pompano Beach is located 11 miles (18 kilometers) north of Fort Lauderdale (JOBS) in Broward County.
Settled around the turn of the 20th century, the city was incorporated in 1907, and is named after the Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus), a tropical game fish.
Pompano Beach is home base for the "Star & Stripes," the famous Goodyear blimp. The city is a popular tourist destination and enjoys a substantial seasonal population. Much of the interest in Pompano Beach can be attributed to its many festivals that celebrate everything from seafood to fishing. These include the Pompano Beach Seafood Festival, Pompano's Fishing Rodeo, and the Food & Wine Festival and Auction.
With the Atlantic Ocean at hand, recreation in Pompano Beach can take the form of anything from swimming and boating, to fishing and scuba diving. And if it's a day at the races you're after, Pompano Beach also has its own racetrack, the Pompano Harness Track.
