Deerfield, Florida - Best City to Live and Work

  • Companies, Real Estate, Schools
  • At 12.6 square miles (33 square kilometers), Deerfield Beach may be one of the smallest cities along Florida's (JOBS) southeast coast, but its wide, sandy beaches and lush vegetation belie its small size.

When "beach" is in a city's name, you can assume the beaches are spectacular – and Deerfield Beach doesn't disappoint! – it is a delight for shell collectors, sun-worshippers, and water babies.

When you tire of fishing sand out of your bathing suit, head to the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in nearby Delray Beach. Dedicated to celebrating Japanese culture – both traditional and modern – its 200 acres (81 hectares) include pine forests, bonsai collections, waterfalls, and nature trails. Or you can browse through local arts and crafts stalls, tapping your toes to the live entertainment, letting loose on the carnival rides, and indulging in international and local cuisine at the annual Deerfest.

If you're looking for something a little quieter than Deerfest's midway, you can seek refuge in the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge – 145,000 acres (58,678 hectares) of land in the northern Everglades. A protected habitat for endangered species, you can learn more about them at the visitor center or try to observe them firsthand from a boat or canoe. Then there is Deerfield Island Park (accessible by boat only), with its nature tours, picnic areas, and marina. Or for a truly unique experience, be sure to take in the thousands of brilliantly hued butterflies that populate the tropical water gardens of Butterfly World.

Florida has a generous biotech, pharmaceutical and medical device community. Some of the companies found throughout the state are Aero Pharmaceuticals, Lotus Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Exactech, Inc., Tyrogenex, Inc., Nanobac Life Sciences, Inc., Accentia Biopharmaceuticals, Noven Pharmaceuticals Inc., DOR BioPharma, Inc., Stiefel Laboratories, Inc. , Viragen, Inc., and IVAX Diagnostics, Inc.

BioFlorida, Florida’s independent statewide bioscience organization serves its members by providing the infrastructure to exchange information and ideas through industry specific programming, education, networking and legislative initiatives.
