Cyrano Sciences, Inc. develops, produces, and markets miniaturized products that mimic the human sense of smell- an electronic nose. Cyrano is applying this ability to detect, measure and quantify vapors in applications across both industrial and consumer settings, including the food and beverage, chemical/environmental, and medical markets.

Cyrano’s sense of smell platform technology is based on research exclusively licensed from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). The company’s core technology is an array of chemical sensors composed of polymer composites that mimic receptors in the human nose. When sensors come in contact with a vapor, the on board processor creates a response signature for that vapor.

Cyrano’s initial product, due out in late 1999, is the first hand held electronic nose which will allow users to obtain important chemical information at the sampling point rather than relaying samples to a laboratory. A second generation silicon-based product, the NoseChip, will contain up to 10,000 individual sensors on a single chip and will be a high volume, cost effective product for incorporation into industrial and consumer products.

Steven Sunshine, PhD., President and CEO

Dr. Sunshine joined Cyrano Sciences, Inc.in November of 1997 from Raychem Corporation where he started and ran an internal start-up focused on sensing technology for the electrical utility marketplace. Dr. Sunshine has extensive experience with polymer composite and sensing based products. Prior to his role at Raychem, Dr. Sunshine was a Member of the Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories.
