The mission of SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science) is to encourage Chicano/Latino and Native American students to pursue graduate education and obtain the advanced degrees necessary for research careers and science teaching professions at all levels.

Since our beginnings in 1973, the rapidly growing SACNAS membership has been composed of science professors, industry scientists, administrators, K-12 educators, and students. As a result, SACNAS is a diverse society with a vested interest in promoting opportunities in graduate science education for Chicano/Latino, Native American, and other underrepresented minority students. Encouraging these students to reach the highest levels in their science careers has been the Society's continuing mission throughout its history.

SACNAS is a national organization with members residing throughout the United States. Since September 1988, SACNAS has maintained its national headquarters in Santa Cruz, California. The SACNAS Board of Directors is composed of scientists, K-12 teachers, and students from across the country. The current officers of the Board include:

President: Dr. Marigold Linton, Director of American Indian Outreach, University of Kansas

Past-President: Dr. Luis Haro, Endocrinology Professor, University of Texas, San Antonio

Treasurer: Dr. Laura Robles, Professor of Biology, California State University, Domiguez Hills

Secretary: Dr. George Negrete, Associate Professor of Chemistry, University of Texas, San Antonio
