The University of Newcastle is a modern, comprehensive, international, research intensive university with a tradition of intellectual service to the people of its region and beyond.

Currently ranked in the top 10 of Australia's 36 publicly funded universities of research output, the University of Newcastle enjoys significant research and teaching partnerships with universities throughout Asia and the Pacific and in Europe, North America and Africa. In the past 12 months, it has invested more than $56 million in research and research training including $3 million in equipment and facilities. A similar amount will be spent in 2005. It currently supports over 370 research scholarships and is host to a range of research centres funded by the Australian government, industry and from its own resources.

A recent Australian Research Council (ARC) grant has seen the establishment of the University of Newcastle as the lead site for a new $12.5 million Centre for Biotechnology and Development. Professor John Aitken of the University of Newcastle is the Director of the Centre, which brings together researchers from four universities - Newcastle, Monash, Queensland and the Australian National University - to carry out genome to phenome research, which has been named as a national research priority area.

The Faculty of Science and Information Technology at the University of Newcastle has 32 research groups and provides funding support for their work. In addition, the Faculty has over 220 full-time equivalent research higher degree students. The Faculty has direct and active involvement in several Centres across, and external to, the University. The Centre for Materials, which includes the Electron Microscope and X-Ray Unit; the Biomolecular Research Facility; the Animal Services Unit and the CRC for Satellite Systems are but a few of those areas in which our staff have input into important nationally funded initiatives. Doctoral or Master degrees can be undertaken in - among other areas - advanced synthetic materials, cognitive neuroscience, drug design and discovery, ecosystem health, neuroimmunology, plant science, reproductive sciences, biotechnogy, sensory and systems neuroscience, and chemometrics.

The Faculty of Health at the University of Newcastle received eight new National Health and Medical Research Council grants in 2003, totalling $5.5 million, and has an annual research revenue of over $13 million. The Hunter Medical Research Institute (HRMI) forms a strategic partnership between the University of Newcastle, Hunter Area Health and the Hunter community, providing an umbrella organisation for medical research in the Hunter region which is now a multi-campus network with over 350 researchers and is recognised as one of Australia's most innovative health and medical research institutes. HRMI has consolidated medical research in the Hunter region into six major programs: Brain and Mental Health (Hunter Neuroscience), Cancer, Cardiovascular Health, Pregnancy and Reproduction (Mothers and Babies Research Centre), and Vaccines, Immunity, Viruses and Asthma (VIVA). The Faculty of Health has over 20 research centres and research programs and has particularly strong community support and involvement.

The Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle is also known nationally and internationally for outstanding research, both pure and applied. Significant research profiles invariably attract high levels of funding and consequently the Faculty is able to purchase the latest and the very best technology. On a per capita basis, the Faculty now attracts more competitive research dollars than any comparable faculty in Australia. On average, the Faculty generates $10 million annually for research and research training. Research areas include - among other areas - process safety and environmental protection, water resource and environmental engineering, and bioinfomatics. Bioinformatics is the involvement of novel algorithms to process genetic data, leading to rapid identification of micro-organism types and assisting in public health issues such as disease and epidemic control.
