The Company's Mission
To discover innovative pharmaceutical products to address unmet medical needs in major therapeutic areas.

About The Company
Tanabe Research Laboratories U.S.A., Inc. (TRL), is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation (MTPC), headquartered in Osaka, Japan. The TRL research staff is highly skilled in biology, pharmacology and medicinal, organic synthetic, computational and analytical chemistry while working in a collaborative environment to discover pharmaceutical products. TRL's staff is focused on small molecule drug discovery. We are committed to enriching MTPC's product pipeline by empowering our scientific team to discover lead drug candidates for novel targets in the areas of inflammation, autoimmunity and metabolic syndrome. TRL has developed programs that are in preclinical development with MTPC and in the clinic in collaborations with GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis.

Our researchers work on novel target-based drug discovery projects in the areas of autoimmunity, inflammation and metabolic syndrome.

TRL builds a pipeline of proprietary drug leads by screening small molecule compound libraries in enzyme-, receptor-and cellbased
assays to identify novel chemical lead compounds with potential for chemical optimization. Structure-activity relationship analysis of data from target-based biochemical, mechanism-based cellular and in vivo efficacy assays enables the optimization of promising candidates for pre-clinical development.

TRL's discovery research strategy is based on a target-family approach. This strategy leverages common discovery platforms and make possible a rapid implementation of new projects. This approach has allowed recent projects to go from target selection to the identification of several lead candidates more efficiently.

Rick Jack, Ph.D. is the Vice President of Research of TRL-USA. Rick has more than 20 years of drug discovery and mechanism of human disease research experience. Prior to joining TRL in August, 2005, he was Vice President, Biology at Triad Therapeutics where he oversaw programs in autoimmunity and inflammation including a p38 MAP kinase program for rheumatoid arthritis that is in the clinic with Novartis. Previously, he served as Vice President for Research and Development at La Jolla Pharmaceutical where he initiated and led programs in autoimmunity and xenotransplantation that included the advancement of several developmental and clinical-stage compounds.

Prior to his work in the biopharmaceutical industry, Dr. Jack was a faculty member in the Department of Rheumatology/Immunology at Harvard Medical School where his lab focused on innate immunity and autoimmune disease. Dr. Jack received his BA from Bates College (Lewiston, Maine), his Ph.D. in immunology from the University of Connecticut Health Center (Farmington, CT) and was a post-doctoral fellow in the immunology of parasitic diseases at the International Laboratory for Research in Animal Diseases (now ILRI) in Nairobi, Kenya.
