The mission of Stanford University's Office of Technology Licensing (OTL) is to promote the transfer of Stanford technology for society's use and benefit while generating unrestricted income to support research and education.

Founded in 1970, OTL's licensing activities encompass inventions, patents, biological materials, computer software programs, copyrightable material, semiconductor masks and the use of Stanford trademarks in emblematic ware. Licenses have been granted in such diverse areas as computer-aided design, biotechnology, medical imaging, music synthesizers and T-shirts, to name only a few. In FY 1993-94, OTL received a total of $38.1 million in royalty income from 200 different licensed technologies.

OTL's staff of 21 people handles over 1100 active dockets. OTL receives three to four new technology disclosures a week, totaling almost three thousand disclosed technologies since inception. Ten to fifteen percent of the disclosures received are licensed and we currently have more than 750 active licenses.

At OTL, the close relationships we have built with both Stanford faculty and outside industry afford us a special opportunity to help facilitate this transfer of technology in ways that could benefit society for generations. Our charter is to create new connections between inventors and industry. We are planting seeds today for the products of tomorrow.
