A graduate of Harvard College and the University of California San Francisco's School of Medicine, Hirsch completed his residency in medicine at the University of Chicago, a clinical pharmacology research fellowship at the University of California San Francisco, and both physiology and cardiovascular clinical fellowships at Harvard Medical School. He is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in cardiovascular diseases. A fellow of the American College of Cardiology, past-president of the national Society for Vascular Medicine and Biology, and founding president of the not-for-profit national Vascular Disease Foundation, Hirsch most recently served as a cardiologist and vascular medicine specialist at Fairview-University Medical Center. He will continue his vascular research both within the Institute as well as within the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health.

Hirsch has served as an author for more than 70 articles in peer-reviewed publications and is an author of two books on peripheral arterial disease. His major research interest is in new medical treatments for acute and chronic peripheral arterial disease, as well as the role of both clinician and public education in defining access to quality vascular care.

"I'm obviously excited to join the Minneapolis Heart Institute and Abbott Northwestern Hospital as we all seek to provide improved access to high quality vascular care to our communities," said Hirsch. "Heart and vascular disease together remain the leading causes of death in the United States. Yet, peripheral arterial disease, aortic aneurysms, and stroke continue to be relatively overlooked in most practices. I look forward to helping to create an interdisciplinary team that can provide a more proactive approach to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of both vascular and heart disease."

An independent health care quality ratings firm named Abbott Northwestern Hospital as the highest rated hospital in Minnesota for cardiovascular care. The national honor came from HealthGrades, an independent health care information company. Abbott Northwestern Hospital/Minneapolis Heart Institute received the highest five-star designation for top quality clinical outcomes in all five areas rated-cardiovascular bypass surgery, valve replacement surgery, cardiac interventional procedures, acute myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure.

The Minneapolis Heart Institute is recognized internationally as one of the world's leading heart institutes. Its facility combines the finest in personalized patient care with sophisticated technology in a unique, family- oriented environment. The Institute's programs address the full range of heart-health needs: prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
