The David H. Murdock Research Institute: a New Research Model at Work

(NC Research Campus, Kannapolis, NC- November 2, 2011)- Since opening for business three years ago, the David H. Murdock Research Institute (DHMRI), located on the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC) in Kannapolis, has shaped a new and collaborative research model, one that melds an academic core laboratory and a contract research organization.

“The advantage,” said DHMRI President James L. Oblinger, PhD, “is that the DHMRI provides the opportunity for scientists from academia, industry and government to access state-of-the-art instrumentation and significant technical expertise in a collaborative partnership model that is flexible and customer focused.”

The DHMRI’s state-of-the-art instrumentation and scientific expertise is focused around six laboratories: analytical science, genomics, bioinformatics, immune sciences, a microscopy suite and NMR facility. The NMR facility houses a 950MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometer, the largest of its kind in the western hemisphere.

The level of flexibility and collaboration permits DHMRI to contribute to a range of research in partnership with their clients that includes:

• Whole genome sequencing for a variety of organisms and plants including fruits and vegetables;

• Protein and metabolite biomarker discovery;

• Verification studies using mass spectrometry and NMR from complex matrices including plasma, serum, urine, saliva and plant extracts;

• Small molecule, metabolite and protein quantitation using mass spectroscopy;

• Protein/metabolite structural elucidation using mass spectrometry and NMR.

“Our labs have more flexibility,” said Analytical Sciences Group Leader Sarah Schwartz, PhD. “We have projects that are research driven, projects where we are doing research development, and projects that are straight contract services. We do a lot of customized solutions that fit exactly what researchers are looking for.”
