Naviscan PET Systems, Inc. and Rockville PET Imaging, P.C. Partner to Bring a New Breast Imaging Technology to New York

5/21/2008 7:43:03 AM

SAN DIEGO, May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Naviscan PET Systems, Inc., a privately held company that manufactures and develops high-resolution PET scanners, announced today the newest installation of the PEM Flex(TM) Solo II scanner at Rockville PET Imaging, P.C. in Rockville Centre, New York. This installation marks the beginning of a multi-unit deal between Naviscan and the operators of Rockville PET Imaging that will bring organ specific, molecular imaging technology to multiple centers throughout the New York state area.

"We are pleased and excited at the growing strategic relationship between Rockville PET Imaging and Naviscan PET Systems," said Paul J. Mirabella, Chairman and CEO of Naviscan. "Both of us believe that this leading-edge technology will significantly and positively influence the effective management of breast cancer patients. Moreover, this multi-unit order represents a highly visible commitment on the part of Rockville PET Imaging to provide differential, personalized healthcare and diagnostic services throughout the greater New York metropolitan area."

The PEM Flex utilizes PET technology for the breast cancer clinical application known as positron emission mammography, PEM. The PEM Flex scanner is similar to the size of a mammography unit, and consists of two high-resolution detector heads, mounted directly to breast immobilization paddles, that are positioned to optimize imaging of the breast. The close proximity of crystal detectors and limited angle tomographic reconstruction produces the high-resolution images. The PEM Flex has proven imaging resolution of 1.5 millimeters, allowing physicians to visualize breast tumors about the size of a grain of rice.

"Throughout my 30 year career as a radiologist, I have been introduced to many new technologies and PEM is certainly one of the most impressive imaging technologies I have seen," said Lucille P. Taverna, M.D., Medical Director of Rockville PET Imaging. "The earliest and smallest breast cancers are the most difficult to detect. We require a more precise imaging device, such as PEM, to identify and treat them quickly."

Imaging scans using the PEM Flex system are reimbursed by both Medicare and an increasing number of private insurance companies, when used for pre-surgical planning, staging of breast cancer, suspicious recurrence and neoadjuvant chemotherapy response.
