Mitrionics' Scientific Advisory Board To Be Spearheaded By Navigenics' Dietrich Stephan

4/21/2009 2:17:13 PM

LOS GATOS, CA -- 04/21/2009 -- Mitrionics AB, the expert in parallel processing software and accelerated hybrid computing servers has appointed Dietrich Stephan, Ph.D., as its first scientific advisory board member.

Within the genomics and bioinformatics markets, Mitrionics' products dramatically accelerate the most complex bioinformatics codes including sequence search and detection, sequence comparison, mapping and alignment. Their bio IT processing systems exploit the parallel, reconfigurable architecture of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), with 10x to 100x speed increases and as much as 90 percent less power consumption vs. non accelerated systems. Mitrionics products enable applications engineers and non-expert VHDL programmers to code applications with the free Mitrion C SDK.

“Dr. Stephan brings a wealth of experience to our advisory board,” said Magnus Hjern, president and CEO. “He is an innovator and expert in genetic research applications aimed at determining the root causes of common human diseases and implementing early diagnostics and intervention. He will be a valuable member of the team by helping our products remain on the cutting edge of genome and bioinformatics applications.”

Dr. Stephan is the co-founder and chief science officer for Navigenics, a leading personalized genomics company based in Foster City, California. Navigenics uses DNA analysis to reveal genetic predispositions to important health conditions, and provides additional tools as well as support from board-certified genetic counselors to help individuals understand their results and take action. In his Mitrionics advisory role he will offer expert advice on the present and future demands the genomics industry will place on computational resources.

“With massive data requiring processing to understand connections between disease and the human genome, Mitrionics’ software and server solutions provide a great leap forward for genome research and applications,” said Dr. Stephan. “Mitrionics massive processing accelerations are a significant and cost-effective bioinformatics research solution. Working with Mitrionics will create an accelerated computing platform that helps effectively solve the most challenging genetic problems and advance disease treatment and prevention.”

Dr. Stephan is also chairman of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Neuroscience Microarray Consortium, and has previously held faculty appointments as Deputy Director for Discovery Research and founding Chairman of the Neurogenomics Division of the Translational Genomics Research Institute. Dr. Stephan trained as a fellow at the National Human Genome Research Institute of the NIH.

About Mitrionics

Founded in 2001, Mitrionics is the technology expert in the field of high-performance hybrid computing supporting HPC applications including bio-informatics. In the bioinformatics arena, its systems and software enable the rapid analysis of massive of data sets into relevant information that was previously unmanageable without supercomputing resources. The company’s Mitrion Virtual Processor (MVP) and the free Mitrion Software Development Kit (SDK) provide cost-effective high performance processing performance to organizations for their most critical applications. The software-centric Mitrion Platform is unique from any other FPGA programming solution, because it eliminates the need for circuit design skills, thus making supercomputing performance accessible to an entire new market of scientists and developers. Mitrionics has key industry relationships with HP, SGI, Intel, AMD, Xilinx, Altera, XtremeData, Nallatech, and SET.
