Michael J. Knapp Serving as Newest Member on Montgomery College Board

4/30/2012 11:04:26 AM

April 30, 2012 -- Michael J. Knapp is currently serving as the newest member on the Montgomery College Board of Trustees. Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley appointed Knapp to the position in March to fulfill the remainder of a term. Knapp’s appointment will end June 30, 2012.

Knapp served on the Montgomery County Council, representing District 2, from 2002 through 2010 and served as the council president in 2007 and 2008. Currently, he is president and CEO of Germantown-based Orion Biostrategies, Inc., a life sciences business consulting firm.

Knapp also serves as vice chair on the Board of Advisors at the Universities at Shady Grove and as a board member of the Montgomery County Community Foundation and Identity, Inc. While serving on the County Council, he was the chair of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments in 2008 (member, 2002-10), a former member of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (chair, 2006).

Knapp is a graduate of the College of William and Mary with a bachelor of arts in economics and government, and he achieved the rank of first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Members of the Board of Trustees exercise general oversight for the College and are empowered to establish policies for implementing the College’s mission. The board’s other responsibilities include setting the salaries and tenure requirements for the College president, faculty, and other employees of the College, as well as establishing entrance requirements, course offerings and tuition rates. Members typically serve six-year terms, with the exception of the student member, who serves for one year.
