How to Fire a Friend

By Tara Weiss -- Hiring a friend is tricky. Firing one is downright awkward and potentially damaging to both your business and your friendship. Managers might be able to avoid some of that, though, if they set the proper guidelines up even before making the job offer. You need to lay out your professional expectations before hiring your friend. If they're not met, it's easier to point to why it didn't work, and it should be easier for both sides to subsequently see that the expectations were based on business, not personal, criteria .
