Cytomegalovirus (CMV) AD169, Purified Whole Virus was inactivated by treatment
with Beta-propiolactone (ß-PL). ß-PL is a DNA alkylating agent that has been shown to be
effective in the inactivation of a virus. It chemically modifes viral DNA without affecting
the immunogenicity or protein structure. After treatment with ß-PL, infectious CMV was
completely inactivated as validated by cell culture based assay, but retained viral morphology
(by TEM). Catalog # 10-275-500
CMV is a common virus that shows no discrimination for geographic or socioeconomic
groups. It is a latent virus found in about 50% to 80% of adults but when the immune system
is compromised by infectious disease or cancer it can cause illness and death. It has also
been linked to many congenital birth defects such as Down syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome,
and neural tube defects.
