Disc Orthopaedic Technologies Inc. To Introduce B-Twin Expandable Spinal Fusion System At NASS

10/19/2005 5:12:48 PM

MONROE, N.J., Sept. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Disc Orthopaedic Technologies Inc., a rapidly growing company involved in developing, manufacturing and marketing of unique, expandable spine and limb implants, announced today that during the upcoming North American Spine Society meeting (NASS) in Philadelphia, it will introduce (Booth 1119 Hall A) the B-Twin Expandable Spinal Fusion System (ESFS) to surgeons who wish to participate in a U.S. Investigational Device Exempt (IDE) pivotal study to investigate the safety and efficiency of the B-Twin ESFS.

Posterior lumbar interbody fusion is increasingly advocated as the treatment of choice for disabling lower back pain due to Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD). In the technique that prevails, implantation of large fixed size cages dictates the sacrifice of the posterior stabilizing structures. Moreover, excessive retraction of the dural sac imposes a potential neurological hazard. The B-Twin ESFS is a titanium device for use in minimally invasive lumbar spinal fusion procedures for the correction of DDD. The B-Twin ESFS has been used in over 9,000 procedures in Europe since it was CE marked in August of 2001. The B-Twin ESFS implant is preloaded on a single use sterile delivery system. The device is introduced into the prepared intervertebral space in a reduced configuration of 5 mm in diameter. It is then expanded up to 15 mm (depending on the size selected) once it is ideally positioned within the intervertebral space. The minimally invasive posterior approach eliminates and minimizes bone dissection; reduces morbidity, blood loss and infection; and causes less trauma to surrounding muscle and tissue.
