Meretek Diagnostics Salutes Nobel Laureates In Medicine

10/19/2005 5:13:20 PM

LAFAYETTE, Colo., Oct. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Meretek Diagnostics, maker of the BreathTek(TM) Urea Breath Test for the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, congratulates Barry J. Marshall and Robin Warren on being awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

The prize was based on their discovery that H. pylori is the most common cause of duodenal and peptic ulcers. An estimated 35% of the US population are infected with H. pylori and older adults, African Americans, Asians and Hispanics tend to be more susceptible. H. pylori is considered a Class 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization, which estimates that about 550,000 new cases of stomach cancer a year are attributed to the bacterium.

"The recognition of this discovery was a long time in coming from the medical community," said Ryuichi Kishigami, CEO of Meretek. "Their accomplishment shows the value of persistence in bringing breakthrough information to the medical community. Through their efforts, millions of ulcer sufferers have found relief from this debilitating disease."

Meretek Diagnostics, located in Lafayette, Colorado, provides a non- invasive test for H. pylori that can be administered in a physician's office and provides 95% accurate results in 20 minutes. The Urea Breath Test (UBT) is the only test for H. pylori that is FDA-cleared to confirm that a patient is cured after undergoing antibiotic therapy. The company is considered a leader in developing technology dedicated to advancing evidence-based medicine.
