Nellcor OxiMax Pulse Oximetry System Delivers Accurate Reliable Results For Maricopa Integrated Health System

10/19/2005 5:11:07 PM

PLEASANTON, Calif., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Nellcor, the market leader and global innovator of intelligent pulse oximetry solutions, today announced that clinicians at Maricopa Integrated Health System are reporting the clinical benefits of the Nellcor(R) OxiMax(R) Pulse Oximetry System with the MAX-FAST(TM) Forehead Sensor. Nellcor's innovative pulse oximetry technology has improved the accuracy and reliability of pulse oximetry monitoring across the system's facilities.

"Compared with older pulse oximetry technology, the Nellcor OxiMax System enables faster detection of hypoxic events, greater accuracy, and more reliable saturation readings," said Kim Whitford, RRT-NPS, Lead Clinical Specialist, Maricopa Integrated Health System and Arizona Burn Center. "We previously used earlobe sensors, but the SpO2 readings were so erroneous because they didn't correlate with patients' blood gas. Nellcor's new MAX- FAST Forehead Sensor has enabled us to detect readings that closely correlate to our patients' SaO2 values.

"During a week-long trial, I compared the OxiMax system's SpO2 readings to each patient's SaO2 values through a series of blood gas draws," continued Whitford. "The results were amazing. The SpO2 readings reported by the OxiMax system with the MAX-FAST sensor were never more than +/-2 of the patient's SaO2 values, and most of the time the readings were an exact match.

"The MAX-FAST Forehead Sensor has also been a tremendous benefit to our burn center. We treat a large number of patients, some with burns over 98% of their bodies. In the past, it was impossible to place a pulse oximetry sensor. We are now using the MAX-FAST sensor, even on patients with facial burns, and are able to obtain accurate, reliable readings. In addition, the MAX-FAST sensor's readings are 30 seconds faster than older technology, enabling us to intervene sooner if there is a problem."

The OxiMax Pulse Oximetry System includes the Nellcor N-595 Pulse Oximeter and the growing line of intelligent, interactive OxiMax sensors. The addition of a digital memory chip embedded in OxiMax sensors gives Nellcor greater flexibility in sensor design. New sensors developed for the OxiMax system include the MAX-FAST Forehead Sensor, which detects changes in SpO2 significantly faster than digit sensors for patients with poor pulse perfusion, and SoftCare(TM) Nonadhesive Sensors, which are designed to protect the fragile skin of neonatal, geriatric and other patients with compromised skin integrity.

"These results reported by Maricopa Integrated Health System demonstrate the power and versatility of the Nellcor OxiMax Pulse Oximetry System," said Dan Roth, Director of Marketing, Nellcor Oximetry. "We developed the OxiMax system in response to our customers' clinical needs. Success stories such as Maricopa illustrate how our latest pulse oximetry platform has improved the clinical utility of pulse oximetry monitoring across a broad range of settings and patient conditions."
