PLEASANTON, Calif., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Nellcor, the market leader and global innovator of intelligent pulse oximetry solutions, today announced that clinicians at Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center in Secaucus, NJ, are using the Nellcor(R) OxiMax(R) Pulse Oximetry System and Oxinet(R) III Central Station and Paging System to more effectively monitor patients' respiratory status. As a result, clinicians report an increase in staff productivity and enhanced patient safety in the hospital's acute pulmonary unit.
"Ninety percent of the patients in our acute pulmonary unit are on ventilators, which means they cannot talk or reach a call button if they need assistance," said Matthew Hamilton, Director, Pulmonary Unit, Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center. "Patients' family members will often seek out a staff member if a pulse oximeter alarms at the bedside. With the Oxinet III and OxiMax systems, they are amazed when the staff member appears in the patient's room seconds after the alarm has sounded. This technology has provided an overwhelming sense of comfort and reassurance for patients and their loved ones."
"Since we began using the OxiMax and Oxinet III systems, we've also noted an increase in staff efficiency and productivity," Hamilton continued. "Through the use of pagers, the respiratory therapists are immediately alerted to developing respiratory events no matter where they are in the unit. In addition, the central monitoring station, which is located in the nursing station, has provided another set of eyes and ears for the nurses."
The Oxinet III system allows up to 24 Nellcor bedside pulse oximeters to be linked via a wireless or hardwire network to a central station monitor display, where clinicians are alerted to alarm events. The system also includes optional pagers that supplement the bedside and central station alarms, and a wireless PDA for viewing patient data remotely. The Oxinet III system is compatible with the OxiMax(R) N-595 Pulse Oximeter, which contains Nellcor's most advanced pulse oximetry technology for monitoring arterial oxygen saturation.
"Patient safety and clinical staffing are two issues at the forefront of today's healthcare concerns," said Dan Roth, Director of Marketing, Nellcor Oximetry. "The Nellcor Oxinet III system, used in conjunction with the OxiMax Pulse Oximetry System, allows clinicians to maximize their staffing resources while enhancing patient safety on the General Care Floors and beyond."
The OxiMax Pulse Oximetry System comprises the Nellcor N-595 Pulse Oximeter and the growing line of intelligent, interactive OxiMax sensors. The N-595 Pulse Oximeter incorporates highly evolved advanced digital signal processing algorithms developed by Nellcor. This technology enables the N-595 Pulse Oximeter to read through challenging monitoring conditions. The N-595 Pulse Oximeter also contains SatSeconds(TM) Alarm Management technology, an innovative feature that gives clinicians a better way to manage nuisance alarms without sacrificing patient safety.
