DescriptionZika has undoubtedly been this summer’s most pressing public health threat, with active transmission reported throughout much of South and Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and most recently in Florida and Singapore. The mosquito-borne virus has infected thousands of residents of the US and its territories and put hundreds of pregnant women and their unborn babies at risk, while Congress’ funding debacle has left government agencies largely underfunded and hindered the development of diagnostic tests and vaccines. The rapid spread of Zika, coupled with its devastating effects on pregnancy outcomes and the absence of vaccines or drugs to treat the disease, has revived a nationwide debate over the U.S. preparedness for emerging infectious diseases and the role of the public and private sectors.

Hear from Karen Midthun, Former Director, Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about the U.S. response to emerging infectious diseases as she discusses the following:

• What we have learned from previous outbreaks, such as West Nile, SARS, H1N1, Ebola

• The role of the U.S. government in funding and approving countermeasures to emerging pandemics and threats

• The importance of public-private collaboration

• How the life science industry can better engage and respond to existing and future outbreaks
