DescriptionTime: 10am PT / 11am MT / 12pm CT / 1pm ET

Despite an understanding of the molecular mechanisms of many neurodegenerative diseases, such as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), Friedrich’s ataxia, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the lag in developing preclinical mouse models has stymied preclinical drug discovery trials. Learn how The Jackson Laboratory’s Rare and Orphan Disease Center is partnering with rare disease foundations, and advocacy groups to develop, validate, and distribute preclinical models and resources to advance preclinical research in these and other neurodegenerative diseases. Join Jackson Laboratory scientists Cathleen Lutz, Ph.D., and Sheri Kuslak-Meyer, Ph.D., as they discuss the following topics:

• The evolution of SMA mouse models

• Emerging mouse models that are providing vital insights into therapeutic treatment of SMA

• The key roles of genetic background and phenotypic standardization in providing consistent preclinical models

• Using available data and resources to accelerate pre-clinical research of SMA, Friedrich’s ataxia, ALS and other rare yet devastating human diseases
