Building Description: The Laval Biotechnology Development Centre (LBDC) is a 128,000 sq. ft. multi-tenant building designed and built in 2003 to meet the highest standards of the biotech industry (visit www.lbdc.ca ). Its infrastructure meets the exacting standards of air and water quality, as well as the low vibration characteristics that are essential for biotech research activities.

In addition to providing easy access to the INRS’s research facilities and services, the building is connected by tunnel to the INRS’s 140 000 sq.ft. vivarium, which will soon be inaugurating a primates section (spring 2007).

Located in the heart of the Biotech City (north of Montreal), and set on the university campus of the INRS (National Institute for Scientific Research), The Biotech City is a biotechnology cluster (visit www.citebiotech.com ) that is conveniently located next to major transportation arteries, and with easy access to Montreal’s subway system; traveling time by car to Montreal’s CBD is 10-15 minutes. The cluster includes companies such as GSK Biologicals, Roche Diagnostics, Charles River Laboratories, Servier Canada, LAB, Labopharm, Neurochem, Biosyntech, Ethypharm, Prometic, and others.

Tax Incentives: The LBDC offers the advantages of a unique tax benefits program granted by the Government of Quebec as well as municipal tax credits which are passed on to the tenants.

Description of space: Improved at a cost of $3.5 million in 2003, this state-of-the-art laboratory space was used for the cultivation of plant cell cultures and high through-put screening of purified plant derived chemical fractions. Improvements include a dedicated HVAC system designed to provide year-round precise temperature and humidity control. Improvements also include:

  • Over 900 linear feet of laboratory work stations with attendant built-in services distributed throughout chemistry and biology labs;
  • Biological safety cabinets/fume hoods of assorted sizes, (including walk-ins);
  • 2 UPS systems;
  • Combined walk-in cool-room/freezer (21’X 45’);
  • RO/DI purified water production and distribution;
  • Natural & nitrogen gas distribution;
  • Used solvents collection reservoirs;
  • Movement monitoring anti-intrusion system, personalized proximity-type card access system, and camera surveillance;
  • Vulcan gas detection system with sensors throughout the premises.
