VIENNA, April 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Booths 2400/2800 Varian Medical Systems (NYSE:VAR), the world leader in radiotherapy equipment and software, will demonstrate its full range of radiotherapy delivery systems and software at the 33rd ESTRO (European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology) meeting, taking place in Vienna from April 4th-7th. The Varian booth will feature the company's technology and products for radiotherapy, radiosurgery, brachytherapy, and proton therapy.

Varian's Edge Radiosurgery system will be featured at ESTRO 33.

Varian's TrueBeam 2.0 platform for radiotherapy and radiosurgery will be on display along with the RapidArc® image-guided intensity-modulated radiotherapy system, the PerfectPitch six-degrees-of-freedom couch, and the Calypso® 'GPS for the Body' system, all of which are aimed at helping clinicians to deliver treatments with both precision and speed. Varian will also exhibit its powerful new RapidPlan software for improving the quality and speed of treatment planning.

Visitors to the Varian booth can also learn more about the company's new Edge Radiosurgery system, Varian's first dedicated, fully integrated end-to-end solution for planning and delivering advanced radiosurgery treatments using new real-time tumor tracking technology and motion management capabilities. Clinicians from the first three hospitals to commence treatments with Edge Radiosurgery -- Champalimaud Center for the Unknown in Lisbon, Humanitas Cancer Center in Milan, and the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, U.S. -- will present results from early treatments for lung, brain, spine and liver tumors at the Varian 'Cutting Edge' symposium on April 6th.

"The next big advances in radiotherapy and radiosurgery involve continuing improvements in how motion is monitored and tumors are tracked during treatments and Varian continues to offer advanced clinical capabilities in these areas," said Rolf Staehelin, head of international marketing for Varian's Oncology Systems business. "This ESTRO meeting enables Varian to showcase new treatment capabilities, as well as the great strides we're making in knowledge-based planning with our new RapidPlan software."

RapidPlan® software helps clinicians to develop high-quality personalized treatment plans for virtually every type of external beam radiotherapy, including intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT). Using RapidPlan, clinicians can create standard of care plans to reduce variability in treatment planning to achieve greater consistency and quality in patient care. On Saturday April 5th, Varian is hosting a symposium entitled 'Knowledge Drives Cancer Care' which focuses on RapidPlan, with presentations from leading institutions in the U.S., Australia and the Netherlands.

Varian will showcase its newly-acquired Velocity* software platform for data-driven clinical decision making. By organizing patient data and making it available in one place, the Velocity software can help clinicians make more informed treatment decisions.

Other booth highlights
Visitors to the Varian booth can learn about the company's EnVision Better Cancer Care global strategic partnership with Siemens Healthcare. Varian and Siemens represent each other's products for radiation oncology customers globally and the two companies are investigating opportunities for joint development of new products for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery. Visitors will be able to learn more about how the two companies have collaborated to ensure 100 percent connectivity between Varian's ARIA® information management software and Siemens medical linear accelerators.

Varian BrachyTherapy will be highlighting further integration between the company's family of afterloader systems and the ARIA oncology information suite, focusing on the system's dose tracking capability, as well as displaying the company's efficient and flexible brachytherapy treatment planning tools BrachyVision, VariSeed and Vitesse.

The Varian booth is also spotlighting the company's ProBeam* proton therapy system which is now slated for installation at seven clinical sites around the world. The ProBeam system incorporates pencil-beam scanning technology, which optimizes the dose applied to every point within the area being treated. The new Scripps Proton Therapy Center in San Diego, U.S., recently became the first in the U.S. to begin clinical ProBeam treatments.

On the eve of the ESTRO meeting, Varian is today hosting an oncology summit in combination with Siemens Healthcare. This educational event features scientific talks and educational sessions examining advances in radiotherapy and radiosurgery, delivered by physicists, clinicians and other healthcare professionals from more than 20 of the world's foremost cancer centers.
