Van Andel Institute Announces Hiring of Chief Operations Officer

Grand Rapids, Mich. (Sept. 5, 2012) – Van Andel Institute (VAI) announces the hiring of Jana Hall, Ph.D., M.B.A., as Chief Operations Officer effective September 17, 2012. Dr. Hall joins the non-profit biomedical research organization following nearly twenty years in research administration and operations management for a 6,400-employee healthcare organization and most recently as a science and technology advisor for the United States Department of State.

“Dr. Hall’s innovative approach, significant management experience and entrepreneurial orientation make her an ideal candidate to meet the challenges and opportunities posed by our fast-growing biomedical research organization,” said Van Andel Institute Chairman and CEO David Van Andel.

Between 1992 and 2010, Dr. Hall served as Director, Executive Director and Vice President for Hawaii Pacific Health, Honolulu, a non-profit healthcare network that includes four hospitals, more than 40 clinics, 1,300 physicians and 6,400 employees. As Director and Executive Director from 1992 – 2004, Dr. Hall initiated a comprehensive clinical genetic services program, grew clinical trials by 500% in three years, increased cytogenetic and molecular laboratory services by 300%, implemented a telemedicine service and received a national award for innovation in technology.

Dr. Hall served as Vice President from 2004 to 2010, during which she oversaw a team of 150 investigators and increased the research grants portfolio by 300% to $50 million, initiated a global business development strategy for pharmaceutical and biotech clinical trials, negotiated research partnerships with nearly two dozen organizations and oversaw operations for the departments of human resources, facilities, legal, IT, finance and business development.

Since 2010, Dr. Hall has worked as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellow for the U.S Department of State, a highly-competitive position in which she served as an International Organizations Science & Technology Advisor. At the State Department, Dr. Hall led U.S. science policy for the United Nations Education, Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the areas of biodiversity, climate, fresh water, oceans, geo-science, science education and engineering and detailed to the U.S. Mission to UNESCO in Paris.

Dr. Hall is the recipient of the U.S. Dept. of State Franklin Award for Peace-Building through Multilateral Science Diplomacy, the U.S. Dept. of State Group Superior Honor Award for Contributions to Israel/Palestinian Diplomacy, two Governor’s Commendations from the State of Hawaii, a National TeleCon Award and the Women in Science Ann M. Budy Award of Excellence, among many other awards.
