University Steps Up Biotech Emphasis

Cal State San Marcos is taking on a new mission: to train the thousands of laboratory technicians, supervisors and executives needed for the region's growing life sciences and biotechnology industries. The university first gave biotech high priority on its "academic blueprint" several years ago after holding meetings with local employers and examining labor market data. The academic programs now being launched arose from that effort, said Karen Haynes, the university's president.
