U.S. Drug Researcher Imprisoned For FDA Fraud

An Alabama doctor who admitted making up research for a drug experiment was sentenced to more than four years in prison on Wednesday and ordered to pay fines and restitution of $1.5 million, U.S. regulators and the Justice Department said. Ann Campbell, 46, had pleaded guilty to the charges of mail fraud last October, Alabama prosecutors and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said. She was accused of submitting data to Aventis Pharma, Inc. that falsely named several people who were supposed to have participated in her research on behalf of the company, but had not. "Campbell submitted the falsified data to Aventis Pharma, Inc, which was sponsoring the drug study to determine the safety and effectiveness of the new drug," the FDA and United States Attorney Alice Martin said in the statement.
