VALLEJO, Calif., July 31, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Touro University California's College of Pharmacy is pleased to announce it has been selected as the recipient of a $150,000 grant by the Joseph & Vera Long Foundation, which will allow the University to increase research and classroom space on its campus.

"This is about creating state-of-the-art technology for the study of health sciences, and will help us apply high-tech courses that enhance the diverse needs and interests of our students," said Shelley Berkley, CEO and Senior Provost for Touro Western Division. "This generous grant from the Joseph & Vera Long Foundation will also enable faculty to create a new and exciting research track for our campus."

The grant will assist in the creation of approximately 2,400 sq. ft. of research space through repurposing four classrooms and meeting rooms to two research labs and two high technology classrooms with digital imaging hardware and software.

"The growth and maturation of the College of Pharmacy have been greatly aided by grants from the Joseph & Vera Foundation.," noted Dr. Katherine Knapp, former Dean in the College of Pharmacy, after learning of the grant. "This latest grant will enable the College to expand its research efforts on the Vallejo campusan important element in taking the College and University to the next level."

From 2010-2013, the Joseph & Vera Long Foundation helped the College of Pharmacy (COP) by providing a $300,000 grant to create a much-needed Pharmacy Practice Center on campus, which was formally opened for use in 2013.

The College of Pharmacy opened in 2005 with 60 students and a unique 2+2 curriculum, which provides two years of clinical training. By 2007, the program was attracting the highest numbers of applications in the nation. In 2014, COP programs include the Doctor of Pharmacy, Masters of Medical Health Sciences with Pharmacy Emphasis, accredited pharmacy residency programs and one pharmacy fellowship.

Graduates from the College of Pharmacy have consistently performed above the 90th percentile on national and California licensing exams. Touro graduates are increasingly found in practice and academic positions throughout California and elsewhere in a variety of settings.
