The VWR Foundation Awards Over $115,000 In Grants

RADNOR, Pa., Oct. 27, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The VWR Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to giving back to the science community, distributed 13 grants totaling over $115,000 during its October meeting. The Foundation supports organizations and programs that are in alignment with its three strategic priorities: research, health and well-being, and science education.

Among the recipients was the Norwich Technical High School in Norwich, CT, whose mission is to provide a world-class, unique and rigorous learning environment for high school students and adult learners. Grant dollars for the Norwich Technical High School will be applied to the Small World Initiative (SWI) program. The SWI program provides undergrad and high school curriculum that focuses on tackling the increasingly serious problem of antibiotic resistance by crowd-sourcing antibiotic discovery.

"After having success in implementing innovative science curriculums at nearly 150 colleges and universities, we saw an opportunity to impact high schools and reach students before they have lost interest in science," shared Erika Kurt, SWI President and CEO. "Our goal is to inspire and retain students in the sciences through hands-on experience addressing real-world health challenges. The VWR Foundation has made it possible to bring our program to Norwich Technical High School and impact students year after year."

"We are excited to be one of the pilot high schools for the Small World Initiative," said Jesse Morin, Biotechnology Department Head at Norwich. "We truly appreciate this grant from the VWR Foundation. These dollars will enable us to expose our students to a broader STEM curriculum and prepare them for careers in biological research."

The Norwich Technical High School will use the VWR Foundation grant to purchase scientific equipment and materials that will provide high school students with an authentic research experience.
