The Macula Vision Research Foundation (MVRF) Announces Their 2014-2015 Grant Recipients

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., Dec. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Macula Vision Research Foundation (MVRF), a national nonprofit focused on funding research to find a cure for macular degeneration and other retinal diseases including childhood blindness, announces their 2014-2015 grant recipients. The grantees will receive $100,000 a year for three years to fund their basic research projects directly aligned with the mission of MVRF to find treatments and a cure for degenerative eye diseases. The four grantees receiving funding were chosen through a selective, invitation-only application process conducted by MVRF's International Scientific Advisory Board.

2014-2015 MVRF Grant Recipients:

  • Kazuko Nishikura, PhD, professor, The Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, PA is conducting research on the involvement of RNA editing and RNA interference in AMD pathogenesis
  • Rachael Pearson, PhD, reader in developmental neuroscience and Royal Society University research fellow, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology in London will be researching retinal repair using embryonic stem cell derived photoreceptors to define the window of transplantation competence
  • SriniVas R. Sadda, MD, professor of ophthalmology, UCLA, Doheny Eye Institute in Los Angeles, CA is studying multimodal image analysis in age-related macular degeneration
  • Nadia Waheed, MD, MPH, assistant professor in ophthalmology, Tufts University Medical School in Boston, MA, will be studying ocular blood flow changes in exudative macular degeneration.

To date, MVRF has awarded more than $20 million in grants to fund visionary research and is committed to funding the best and brightest researchers in the world in order to find a cure for the disease which is the number one cause of blindness in people over 50.
