CHICAGO, Sept. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Female Health Company (NASDAQ - CM: FHCO), which manufactures the world's leading female condom, today announced the increased access and use of FC2 Female Condom in Kenya.

Female Health Company.

The Female Health Company reports that it shipped 1.4 million FC2 Female Condoms to Kenya in the fourth quarter of FY2014 through the UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund), reflecting the success of in-country programming efforts. Working with the Muthaa Community Development Foundation (MCDF), more than 500 staff members at health facilities, NGOs, CBOs, student and government offices have been trained in the role, benefits and utilization of the FC2 Female Condom since the beginning of the year. The program involved the development and adaptation of education and information materials tailored specifically for the nation of Kenya.

"MCDF targets training to 'at risk' populations, as well as student and labor organizations," noted Emily Karechio, Founder and President of the Muthaa Community Development Foundation. "Organizations that we have trained are entitled to be issued FC2 Female Condoms for distribution, increasing the access to FC2 for the women in Kenya. The Female Health Company has invested in training and programming in Kenya since 2012, resulting in continued increases in FC2 distribution. More than 3.9 million units have been distributed as a result of these activities, thereby empowering and protecting more women throughout the country. Next year we will develop a mobile phone software application and reporting tool to improve consolidated data collection on FC2 distribution."

With a population of 43 million, and an HIV/AIDS rate of 6.1% within the ages 15-49 years, Kenya is a critically important country in which to continue FC2 programming activities.

"We normally do not publicly comment on routine order fulfillment through our large customers like UNFPA and USAID," stated Karen King, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Female Health Company. "These key customers are continually placing orders for FC2 throughout the year. However, we are particularly pleased with our partnership in Kenya and the progress being made there to reach and empower women. As Global Female Condom Day approaches, we want to celebrate these achievements and other ongoing efforts to increase awareness and demand for FC2 around the world."

Global Female Condom Day is September 16, 2014. Activities are planned worldwide to highlight the importance of making female condoms available to women everywhere.
