When health science companies signed up to “go electronic” to eliminate paper by digitizing paper documents, many of them didn’t realize the significant investment in labor, software, and scanning equipment that would be required. In healthcare, a new standard and system known as the Electronic Submission of Medical Documentation System (EsMD) eliminates the need for mailing paper medical bill authorizations and costly scanning and tagging in the US Medicare program. By using digital signing along with a secure cloud system that links healthcare providers with payors, the new EsMD initiative will eliminate the need for costly document scanning, reduce manual coding and tagging, and also reduce the number of fraudulent documents.
