Stanbio Laboratory Release: New Web Portal Focuses on Testing for Diabetic Ketoacidosis With ß-Hydroxybutyrate

BOERNE, TX, February 21, 2012 – Stanbio Laboratory has launched a new web portal focused on the benefits and importance of testing for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) – a potentially dangerous condition that can affect diabetics and others with metabolic imbalances. DKA can occur when there is not enough glucose (carbohydrates) to provide for the body's energy needs.

The Stanbio Laboratory web portal is a collection of information designed to help clinicians, physicians, diabetic nurse educators, medical sales professionals and patients better understand DKA, its risk factors, symptoms and also testing methods using ß-hydroxybutyrate. Stanbio Laboratory makes an enzymatic chemistry reagent, ß-hydroxybutyrate LiquiColor®, which is used on clinical chemistry analyzers to quantifiably measure the presence and degree of ketosis. This enzymatic testing method represents a significant improvement over the more common semi-quantitative methods of testing.

“Our new web portal will be a convenient place for medical professionals to find useful clinical information about DKA – while also learning about applications for our unique ß-hydroxybutyrate chemistry reagent,” said William R. Pippin, Stanbio Laboratory President. “We have seen increasing demand for our ß-hydroxybutyrate product by many of the top hospitals in the U.S. – and now, mid-size and small hospitals are asking for it too,” Pippin added.

James H. Nichols, Ph.D., DABCC, FACB, Medical Director, Clinical Chemistry for Tufts University School of Medicine, helped review the structure and content of the Stanbio ß-hydroxybutyrate web portal. “I think this web site will be a useful resource for anyone interested in testing for ketosis,” Nichols said.

A user name and password are required to view the portal. To get a user name and password, individuals can visit www.stanbio.com and select the Sign Up link at the top of the home page.
