Sigma-Aldrich Corporation Named To Dow Jones Sustainability Indices

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (Nasdaq: SIAL), a leading Life Science and Technology Company, was recently named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI), a list of leading companies from around the world in terms of their social, environmental and economic performance. Sigma-Aldrich, which has been named for three consecutive years, is the only St. Louis-based company to receive this designation.

"Sigma-Aldrich is honored to be featured again on the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices," said Rakesh Sachdev, Sigma-Aldrich President and CEO. "As a Company, we strive to make the world a cleaner, healthier and safer place to live, and solid sustainability practices at the corporate level are an embodiment of this mission. We place a high value on the impact being a better corporate citizen can have on our employees, our customers, our shareholders and the communities where we live and work."

With the introduction of its GC1015 Initiative in 2010, Sigma-Aldrich has increasingly ramped up its efforts to reduce waste, energy and water usage and carbon emissions; to improve supply chain transparency; and to increase its greener alternative products offering and employee volunteerism around the world. In 2014, the Company saw increased positive outcomes in the three segments (Economic, Environmental, and Social) tracked by the DJSI. According to Jeffrey Whitford, Global Citizenship Director, Sigma-Aldrich garnered a 3% overall increase in its performance as measured by the DJSI, and that includes a 7% improvement in its social score - the largest area of improvement for the Company.

"Sigma-Aldrich has worked hard in planning and executing an effective global corporate responsibility program," said Whitford. "Our continued presence on the DJSI is a testament to the dedication of our employees around the world who continue to make sustainability and social responsibility a priority, and we are pleased to be recognized for our efforts."

Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices, developed with investment specialist RobecoSAM, invites 3,300 companies from around the world that are focused on sustainability to complete its annual assessment.  It is the first global index to track the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies based on economic, environmental and social factors. The indices serve as benchmarks for investors who integrate sustainability considerations into their portfolios, and provide an effective engagement platform for companies who want to adopt sustainable best practices.
