Should Novo Nordisk A/S Fire Paula Deen as Spokesperson?

Just when you thought you could get on with your life and forget the ruckus that Paula Deen created last year for Novo Nordisk, the drugmaker is being pulled into controversy all over again. The ‘Queen of Southern Cuisine,’ you may recall, was lambasted last year for failing to acknowledge that she has diabetes, even while cooking unhealthy dishes on her Food Network show right up until the time she signed on as the Novo Nordisk spokeswoman (back story). Now, though, the network has decided not to renew her contract when it expires next month because she confessed to using racial slurs. As we noted last year, her use of the ‘N’ word was disclosed in a lawsuit filed by a former Deen employee, who was general manager of their restaurant and accused her and her brother, Bubba, of racism and sexism. There were also allegations of derogatory remarks made about Jews and sexual harassment and profanity in the workplace.
