LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Sterile compounder SCA Pharmaceuticals is creating a 90,000 square-foot manufacturing facility and will hire up to 360 people in Connecticut over the next four years to support the site, the Hartford Courant reported Tuesday.

SCA plans to build its site in Windsor, Conn., according to a statement from Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's office. SCA manufactures injectable pharmaceuticals in ready-to-administer dosages for use at hospitals and healthcare facilities. The company currently employs 210 people at its Arkansas facility.

Although little was said about SCA’s timeline for ramping up its hiring, the company has leased a facility in Windsor. Little was also said about how soon the SCA facility will be fully operational. SCA’s decision to open a site in Connecticut was supported in part by an $8.5 million infusion from the state’s Department of Economic and Community Development. The funds will be used to improve the facility and allow for the purchase of machinery and equipment, according to the governor’s statement.

Gene Graves, chief executive officer of SCA Pharmaceuticals, said in a statement that Connecticut represents an “ideal location” for the company’s expansion. He said the state has a strong workforce which SCA can tap into and also noted the “myriad of transportation options” available to the company from that area.

On its website, SCA currently lists nine positions for the Windsor facility, including compounding technician, narcotic inventory specialist, pharmaceutical buyer and microbiology EM manager. The company also shows four positions at its Little Rock site, including pharmacist, pharmacy compounding technician and a filtration technician for microbiology.

In its home state of Arkansas, SCA operates a 17,000 square-foot sterile compounding center that includes two extensive ISO 7 sterile compounding laboratories.

SCA has obtained State Boards of Pharmacy licenses in 47 states, which allows it to provide outsourced medications to health systems across the country. Among the medications SCA lists on its website are antibiotics cefazolin and vancomycin, as well as cardiovascular drugs adenosine, esmolol and heparin.

The company has a goal of helping healthcare facilities increase efficiencies and reduce costs while improving patient care.

On its website, the company said it is in a state of rapid growth and will expand clean room areas and will soon be designating “new, off-site locations” for our administrative offices and warehouse. The company did not specify on its website if the Connecticut facility is part of this expansion, or if it will be building a new space in Arkansas or some other state.
