RightEye Developing Revolutionary Eye-Tracking Test For Reading Disorders

Health tech innovator acquires exclusive rights to create test that will noninvasively identify reading disorders in students at all grade levels

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--RightEye LLC, a health technology company using eye tracking to revolutionize patient care and vision performance, announced today that it has acquired the exclusive license to create an objective, repeatable test to identify reading disorders in students at all grade levels. The new test, which assesses eye movements used during reading to identify challenges, will help differentiate eye movement issues from other reading disorders, resulting in earlier and more appropriate intervention for young readers.

“OEP is pleased to see these stories continue to benefit the optometry community and the community at large. This should make it easier for readers of all ages and statuses to be assessed more effectively.”

“RightEye is proud to bring our spirit of innovation in healthcare to education,” said Barbara Barclay, president of RightEye. “With this test, school systems and optometrists will be able to identify reading disorders, apply an appropriate intervention, and avoid the learning and behavioral challenges often associated with misdiagnosis.”

To develop their new reading test, RightEye acquired an exclusive license to the reading stories, norms and associated comprehension questions developed by the Optometric Extension Program Foundation. The content includes nearly 100 stories, short and long, available in 12 languages, each marked with a level of difficulty that corresponds to different grade levels for beginning, intermediate and advanced readers. The RightEye Reading Test will identify and report metrics that are important to assessing ocular motor abilities during reading, including words per minute, fixations and regressions.

“The OEP Foundation is delighted to support the creation of a reading test that uses the kind of noninvasive remote eye tracking that RightEye’s system offers,” said Kelin Kushin, the executive director of OEPF. “OEP is pleased to see these stories continue to benefit the optometry community and the community at large. This should make it easier for readers of all ages and statuses to be assessed more effectively.”

This revolutionary test for reading disorders will be available to healthcare providers through RightEye’s platform, which was launched earlier this year and already offers a series of eye-tracking-based tests and training. These include:

  • RightEye Neuro Vision™ — a two-minute test that helps health care providers more clearly understand the severity of a patient’s head trauma and better assess recovery over time.
  • RightEye Essential Vision™ — a comprehensive category of core vision tests that take only a few minutes to complete and provide a faster, more accurate and robust way to implement standard vision screenings around the world.
  • RightEye Performance Vision™ — a set of vision tests to help athletes and members of defense forces by assessing vision strengths and identifying areas of vision that can be improved to enable them to reach maximum performance levels.

“As one of RightEye’s first customers, I am a great supporter of RightEye and use it every day in my practice,” said Dr. Deborah Zelinsky, founder and CEO of the Mind Eye Connection in Northbrook, Illinois, whose international practice emphasizes assessment and treatment of concussions and learning problems. “The exciting launch of RightEye’s upcoming, easy-to-use eye-movement reading test assessment will help us pinpoint issues affecting reading ability earlier and more cost-effectively, which will open up a whole new world of opportunities to improve the lives of people, especially young children, who have been challenged by reading due to undiagnosed vision or other health disorders.”

The reading test is expected to be available in February 2017.
