Rheonix, Inc. To Showcase Breakthrough Technology That Addresses Obstacles In Molecular Testing At ASM2015

ITHACA, N.Y. — Rheonix Inc., a developer of fully automated molecular testing solutions, will showcase its breakthrough molecular testing platform, the Encompass Optimum™, at asm2015. The platform performs fully automated, complex molecular assays in an easy-to-use and economical format, addressing workflow and staffing obstacles that research laboratories are facing today. The 115th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) will be held in New Orleans, May 30-June 2.

Research laboratories in the U.S. and abroad are constrained by a lack of qualified personnel and highly specialized technicians to fill a growing number of professional laboratory positions. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the number of medical laboratory technologist and technician positions is expected to increase to more than 373,500 by 2020, an increase of 13 percent from 2010. Many of which remain unfilled as over half of all laboratories are reporting difficulty hiring laboratory personnel, an issue that is compounded by an aging workforce. The national average age of the laboratory workforce in 2010 was 49.2, compared to 43.6 just four years prior, according to the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Additionally, the ASCP reports the number of laboratory training programs decreased by almost 25 percent from 1990 to 2010 and the number of individuals graduating from these programs also declined.

The Rheonix Encompass Optimum also meets research laboratories’ demand for more sophisticated tests and technology that is capable of high throughput, high complexity and improved workflow efficiencies.

“Obstacles facing research labs today, such as inefficient workflow and a lack of trained staff, create an environment that is receptive to workforce multipliers and automated systems like the Encompass Optimum,” said Steve Pemberton, vice president of marketing and sales, Rheonix. “It is a first-of-a-kind system that incorporates totally open software where users can build their own sample-to-answer complex molecular tests. This will enable many laboratories to greatly simplify the testing process.”

The Encompass Optimum is an automated system that streamlines workflow for building and implementing molecular assays as a nonclinical tool. It is a platform with unmatched versatility that allows users the flexibility to configure their own testing and control all aspects of assay performance, while keeping the testing simple and maintaining the ease of use of the instrument. The Encompass Optimum allows users to create their own sample-to-answer, fully automated, complex molecular assays in an easy-to-use format using the Rheonix CARD® cartridge. The CARD is a cartridge the size of a smartphone that can run several biological samples through a fully integrated molecular analysis with no user intervention—it automatically manipulates the network of microfluidic pumps to move fluids through the channels of the CARD. The EncompassOptimum can dramatically decrease the complexities of creating user-defined testing, while increasing efficiency and accuracy. Furthermore, the product’s automation, capability for high throughput and high-complexity assays, and unique sample-to-result system will allow the platform to solve workflow inefficiencies within many research labs.

Held in the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, asm2015 is the world’s largest meeting of microbiologists. This year’s meeting will showcase the central role of microbes in the biosphere by communicating today’s cutting-edge science in the diverse areas of microbiology through a wide range of interactive workshops, scientific sessions and networking events.

Show attendees are invited to stop by booth 476 to talk to the Rheonix team and learn more about the company’s technology.
