Puzzling Rare Birth Defects Hit Washington State

Yakima, Benton and Franklin counties together logged seven cases of the rare birth defect anencephaly in 2013, the fourth year of unusually high numbers of cases, the state Department of Health reported Tuesday. Investigators are still trying to pinpoint why the three-county region in the south-central part of the state is seeing so many cases of the fatal defect.
