Purac to Open Plant in Tucker, Creating New Jobs

A biomaterials manufacturer plans to invest about $20 million in a biomaterials manufacturing plant in metro Atlanta Netherlands-based Purac will make resorbable polymers for the medical and pharmaceutical industry at the 60,000-square-foot plant in Tucker. The project is expected to create up to 50 jobs. Purac makes lactic acid based bioplastics. The company is part of Netherlands-based CSM, a global player in bakery supplies and food ingredients. Geogia Gov. Nathan Deal is expected to announce the project Friday morning. Deal called on the company during his European mission last summer. Purac has five production units worldwide, a global network of sales office, local application centers and more than 1,000 employees. State economic development and Metro Atlanta Chamber worked on the deal. The cost of doing business and available real estate makes Georgia an attractive destination for pharma manufacturing companies with operations on the coasts. Warehousing and distribution costs are nearly 13 percent lower in Atlanta than in Boston or San Francisco. Manufacturing costs in Georgia, meanwhile, are nearly17 percent lower than the coasts.
