PPD, Inc., Kendle and ICON top CenterWatch Inc.'s 2011 Global CRO Report Card

BOSTON, Mass., May 2, 2011—A new CenterWatch survey released today shows contract research organizations (CROs) have continued to improve their relationships with investigative sites for the third straight year, focusing on improving project management and training their field monitors.

The 2011 CenterWatch Global Investigative Site Survey is the most comprehensive measurement of site/CRO relationships, as it marks the first time CenterWatch has asked sites around the world simultaneously, including in the U.S. and Europe, to rank CROs. The top-rated CROs were ranked based on responses from 1,205 clinical research site professionals during February and March, rating CROs they had worked with in the past two years on 29 relationship attributes.

Three global CROs—PPD, Kendle and ICON—came out on top. PPD and Kendle dominated the results, each receiving “excellent” and “good” ratings by 84% of the investigative sites they manage. Top-rated CROs also received the highest frequency of positive rankings across all relationship attributes. Scores for overall relationship quality were close among six CROs, with PRA International, Quintiles and Covance following closely behind the top three. Rounding out the list of CROs were Parexel, i3 Research, INC Research and PharmaNet.

PPD also received the highest “excellent” score for overall relationship quality, earning the number one spot by focusing on the needs of sites in a variety of ways, including supplying technology and support, providing clear protocols and timelines and concentrating on strong training programs for clinical researchers.

“Conducting this annual survey among global investigative sites is extremely important particularly given the highly active role that CROs now play in managing global site relationships,” comments Joan Chambers, COO of CenterWatch. “CROs evaluate sites on their clinical study performance and provide feedback to sites. The CenterWatch survey provides the same opportunity for sites to voice their opinions in evaluating relationships with CROs. Contract service providers really take this feedback to heart in improving their relationships with investigative sites around the world.”

CenterWatch has been conducting its annual investigative site surveys since 1997, and in June will release the results of investigative site rankings of the top pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
