Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA) CEO Resigns in Disgust

Tariq Ikram, acting chairman of the Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA), announced on Thursday that he would be resigning from his post because he was “not allowed to speak truth about what happened in the recent Punjab Institute of Cardiology’s (PIC) tragedy by other office-bearers”. “I resign as an office-bearer from the PPMA,” Ikram said. His decision came during a press conference that had been called to present the industry’s viewpoint on the recent tragedy. He claimed that the conference lacked any of his input and that his colleagues had not allowed him to speak the truth. In an incident that shocked the nation, nearly 150 heart patients expired in Punjab after the PIC allegedly distributed spurious medicines for free among 40,000 heart patients. Ikram said that he also stood to withdraw his company membership from the PPMA.
