SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y., Aug. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Strides for Life 9 will return to Southampton, NY at 8:45 a.m. on Sunday, August 10, 2014. The 3-mile fun run/walk around scenic Lake Agawam was the first ever of its kind to support lung cancer research and is a signature event of the Lung Cancer Research Foundation (LCRF, www.lungfund.org). LCRF funds critical lung cancer research grants at leading cancer research institutions across the country including Memorial Sloan Kettering, Dana Farber, Weil Cornell, and Yale.

The race is chaired by Libby Abelt, Marjorie Adams, Alexis Bodenheimer, Podi Constantiner, Amalia Dayan Lindemann, Kristina Fink, Celia Gerard, Pippa Gerard, Eugenie Niven Goodman, Jessica Kisling, Kimberly Kravis Schulhof, Sherie Moalemzadeh, Alan Mnuchin and Alessandra Rampogna, David Monk, Megan Nadosy Magyar, Fernanda Niven, Roxanne Palin, Dorothy Palin, Andrea Palin Fayer, Dana Rubin, Harlan and Brian Saroken, Gambrelle Snyder, David Weinstein, Rose Ann Weinstein, Carol Weisman, Virginia Wettlaufer, and Karen and Gary Yablon.

The Lung Cancer Research Foundation has awarded grants for more than 90 lung cancer research projects since 2005. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women worldwide. Each year more men and women in the United States die of lung cancer than breast, prostate, ovarian, and colorectal cancers combined. The American Cancer Society estimates over 220,000 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed this year in the United States alone, yet lung cancer receives less federal research funding per death than any of the other major cancers.

Strides for Life 9 is dedicated to raising awareness about the devastating effects of lung cancer, and to ensuring that lung cancer research receives the funding it needs. The LCRF Board of Directors has committed to covering all costs for the race, to ensure that all proceeds from Strides for Life 9 will support critical lung cancer research. LCRF Board Chair Pippa Gerard says "we truly appreciate the overwhelming support for Strides for Life from the Southampton community and beyond. The many generous donations in support of lung cancer research are inspiring. All donations and registration fees at Strides for Life will go directly to scientific researchers who are looking for innovative ways to fight lung cancer."

Hundreds of participants have registered for this year's event, including professional runners, first-time runners, walkers, families, lung cancer survivors and current patients. Many generous sponsors have offered their support for the event including Chopard, Juice Press, Pure Protein, The Silver Palate, Hampton Dental Group, South Edison Restaurant, homenature. Media and supporting partners include Beach 101.7, WBAZ, WEHM, and WPPB.
