Treatment for Children with Spinal Deformities Continues Evidence-Driven, Rapid Adoption

ALISO VIEJO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ellipse Technologies, Inc., a global medical device company, announced today that its proprietary MAGEC (MAGnetic Expansion Control) spinal bracing and distraction system has been used to treat more than 2000 patients. The company also reported that more than 25% of these patients were treated in 2015, demonstrating acceleration of adoption of the technology.

The MAGEC system has introduced a quality of life enhancing option for young patients with early onset scoliosis (EOS). The system consists of magnetically-driven adjustable spinal rods and an external remote control device. It is the only non-invasively adjustable distraction technology system available for the treatment of EOS. The innovative technology eliminates painful repeated surgeries for distractions, typically performed every six months, which are required by other EOS treatment options.

By using an external remote control to adjust the rods, the MAGEC system can be non-invasively distracted in seconds in a precise, controlled manner after the initial implantation. This system enables a treatment technique advancement that is being increasingly adopted by surgeons all over the world who treat children with EOS, as evidenced by the more than 2000 patients treated to date.
