"I've been in the home program for 8 years and they have been my most gratifying years as a nurse," said Melanie Porter, RN, who has been a dialysis nurse for over 20 years. "Thanks to NxStage and the System One, I feel patients' gratitude every day. This heartwarming and humbling campaign gives us, as home hemodialysis nurses, the rare opportunity to be recognized by the people we so deeply care about, as well as a chance to show people how passionate we are about making a difference in people's quality of life."

Patients, nurses, and physicians may nominate their "Nurse Heroes" by visiting www.Nxstage.com/herobetween August 25 and September 8. Voting will occur from September 9 to September 19, and the winner will be announced on October 14. Nominations are open to all home hemodialysis nurses.

Following the training nurses provide on the System One, patients often report an increased sense of freedom and flexibility when they can perform their own care at home. The Nurse Hero campaign allows patients to express sentiments of appreciation for the extraordinary care these "Nurse Heroes" provide to countless, and sometimes fearful, patients on a daily basis.

"Simply put, there is no more pivotal role than the home training nurse in making life-changing home hemodialysis therapy and its tremendous benefits available to patients" said Joe Turk, president of NxStage Medical, Inc. "The Nurse Hero campaign allows patients and healthcare professionals to recognize this, showing their appreciation and respect for each nurse's personal investment in patient well-being."

Despite the health benefits that home hemodialysis may provide to those with chronic kidney disease, this form of therapy is not for everyone. The reported benefits of home hemodialysis may not be experienced by all patients. The risks associated with hemodialysis treatments in any environment include, but are not limited to, high blood pressure, fluid overload, low blood pressure, heart-related issues, and vascular access complications. The medical devices used in hemodialysis therapies may add additional risks including air entering the bloodstream and blood loss due to clotting or accidental disconnection of the blood tubing set. Certain risks are unique to the home. Treatments at home are done without the presence of medical personnel and on-site technical support. Patients and their partners must be trained on what to do and how to get medical or technical help if needed.

About the NxStage System One
The NxStage System One is the first and only truly portable hemodialysis system cleared for home use by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Its simplicity and revolutionary size (just over a foot tall) are intended to allow convenient use in patients' homes and give patients the freedom to travel with their therapy. When combined with the NxStage PureFlow SL Dialysis Preparation System, patients are able to further simplify, using ordinary tap water to create dialysis fluid. Unlike conventional hemodialysis systems, the System One requires no special infrastructure to operate. Under the guidance of their physician, patients can use the NxStage System One, with their trained partners, where, how and when it best meets their needs - at home or on vacation and at a medically appropriate treatment frequency. http://www.nxstage.com/.
