New York's Mela Sciences Plans Move to Maryland After $42.5 Million Buy

A publicly traded New York medical-device developer that recently acquired a local company’s laser skin care technology is planning to relocate its headquarters to Montgomery County.

The move is a result of an agreement reached by MELA Sciences Inc. of Irvington, N.Y., to purchase PhotoMedex Inc.’s Xtrac and Vtrac laser devices, used to treat psoriasis and other skin disorders, for $42.5 million.

“We are keeping 100 percent of the employees at PhotoMedex (NASDAQ: PHMD) who are involved in the manufacturing and the sales and marketing of the lasers,” said Jeff O’Donnell, chairman of MELA — and the former co-founder and CEO of PhotoMedex.
