The day has come and it’s time for you to chat up hiring managers at a career event. You’ve prepared your resume, done your research and made it to the event. But now comes the hard part— the networking.

Networking can be scary. How do you sell yourself to an employer or connect with someone you don’t know? It may be a little bit awkward, but these tips will help you overcome the nervousness and blow them away.

Be interested in others. Networking is a two-way street. You need to show others that you are interested in making a genuine connection with them. Come prepared with unique questions that will help you begin to develop a deeper relationship and will also make you more memorable.

Prepare your materials. It may be a no brainer, but that just means it’s really important! Go to the event with a plan and be over-prepared for what you may need. You don’t want to be caught in a situation where you can’t show someone exactly what they need.

Set goals. What do you want to get out of this event? A couple business cards? An interview? Four LinkedIn connections? Set some goals that you can work toward at the event. Whatever they are, keep your eye on the prize.

Come up with questions. Think about what kinds of questions will impress others and then ask them! Be curious and interested. By having questions on deck, you can get the information and conversation you want.

Go with others. Everyone has that one friend that is really good in networking situations. Try bringing them with you to help break the ice! Having them as a wingman can make the situation a lot more comfortable, and you could learn from your friend.

Actually follow up with people. You put a lot of work into networking at the event, but it doesn’t stop once they run out of punch. You should definitely follow up with people and keep the connection going. By following up with the people you’ve met, that is the way you get access to new opportunities!

Follow these tips and you’ll find success at any career event. Hope to see you at one of our Talent Connect events, or at BIO Talent Connect!
