Montgomery College Receives Major Grant to Purchase Health Science Instructional Equipment

9/20/2011 10:08:32 AM

September 19, 2011 -- Montgomery College is one of eight institutions of higher education in Maryland, the District of Columbia and Virginia to have received a workforce grant from Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States. The $198,824 award will allow Montgomery College to purchase instructional equipment for its nursing and allied health programs.

“This gift will enable the College to continue providing interactive, cutting-edge training for students in our rapidly-growing health sciences programs,” said Dr. DeRionne Pollard, Montgomery College president. “Our partnership with Kaiser Permanente will have an immediate impact on helping meet the vital community need of skilled health care providers."

Montgomery College offers nationally-accredited curricula in health sciences at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus. The programs include education in nursing, health information management, physical therapist assistant, radiologic technology, diagnostic medical sonography, polysomnography (sleep technology), and surgical technology. "As the model for the future of health care, Kaiser Permanente’s grant to Montgomery College demonstrates a commitment to support, train, and educate future health care professionals here in Montgomery County and throughout the region," said Maritha Gay, senior director of External Affairs, Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States. "This is not only an investment in education enhancements for future health professionals, but will ultimately impact community health by creating improvements in quality of care."

Kaiser Permanente's mission is to invest in the future of health care and build communities that sustain good health. By awarding more than $1.5 million in workforce grants, it is estimated that approximately 2,400 nursing, allied health, and health technology students will benefit from scholarships, equipment and educational training.
