Montgomery College Hosts Spectrum Lecture About Climate Change and Carbon Capture

January 31, 2011 -- Joseph Giove III, senior program manager with the United States Department of Energy and a Montgomery College alumnus, will speak at Montgomery College-Germantown on Tuesday, February 22 at 4:30 p.m. as part of the College’s 2011 Spectrum Lecture Series. The talk will take place in Globe Hall, which is located in the High Technology and Science Center, 20200 Observation Drive, Germantown, Md. This event is free and open to the public. Giove’s talk, titled “Carbon Capture: One Approach to Address Climate Change,” will feature a solution to climate change that is currently being explored. With carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, carbon dioxide can be captured from fossil fuel power plants and transported to deep underground reservoirs for long-term geologic storage. Over the past few decades, several large-scale tests have been safely conducted, demonstrating great promise in addressing carbon dioxide emissions. This lecture will explore the process and science of carbon capture and storage as a possible solution for greenhouse gas mitigation.

Like all Spectrum Lectures, this presentation is designed for a non-scientific audience, enabling scientists, students and the community to learn about ground-breaking advancements in science.

As the senior program manager for the Department of Energy’s Division of Carbon Capture and Storage Demonstrations within the Office of Fossil Energy, Giove helps manage the FutureGen 2.0, Clean Coal Power Initiative, and Industrial Carbon Capture and Storage Programs.

Giove holds a Bachelor of Science from Lee University and a Master of Science from the University of Maryland University College. He attended Montgomery College from 1991-93, and was the 1992-93 Montgomery College-Rockville Male Athlete of the Year.
