Medical Device Startup, C8 MediSensors Inc. Moves to Edenvale; Expect to Create 60 New Jobs

Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal - by Lisa Sibley -- Stealthy startup C8 MediSensors Inc. has moved into the former Nortel Networks space at 6375 San Ignacio Ave., San Jose.

The company needed more space for its manufacturing and growing business.

Founded in 2003, the private company makes a non-invasive glucose monitoring device for diabetes. But the technology has other potential uses, including medical diagnostics, monitoring and research.

“When I first met with Bob McNamara [CEO] and his team, I was immediately impressed with their excitement and passion for their product,” said Councilman Ash Kalra. “San Jose is still the innovation capital of the world, and despite the recent economic difficulties, San Jose remains committed to attracting forward-thinking, job-creating companies like C-8.”

Kalra’s district includes the Edenvale property in South San Jose where the company has relocated.

Kalra said C8 MediSensors’ decision to manufacture its technology in Edenvale is expected to create more than 60 new jobs by the end of the year, 500 jobs by the end of 2012, and 1,000 jobs by 2013.

The 2-story office and R&D space had a minimum of 51,000 square feet available, with sub-leasing rates advertised at between 95 cents and $1.25, including taxes, maintenance and utilities.

C8 MediSensors recently received $400,000 from the San Jose Redevelopment Agency to acquire industrial and manufacturing equipment under a capital equipment and assistance agreement. C8 MediSensors also worked out an agreement with the city to receive additional funding based on San Jose sales tax revenue over the next three years.

Last year, C8 MediSensors also received $244,479 under the health care reform act’s federal biotech grant program.
