BOSTON, March 21, 2014—MDGBoston, the New England medical device industry’s professional network, announced today that it will sponsor a symposium on Wednesday, June 11, 2014: “The Year of the Brain: Advances in Imaging, Diagnostics and Therapeutic Delivery,” from 3:30—8:00 p.m. at Foley Hoag Law Offices, 155 Seaport Blvd., Boston.

“This symposium will spotlight not only seminal advances in basic and applied science but also what they mean for entrepreneurs, medical product developers, healthcare providers, and patients,” said Bertha Madras, PhD, Professor of Psychobiology, Harvard Medical School.

Academic researchers in neuroscience are providing game-changing insights into brain functions while creating extraordinary advances in the technologies required to develop better treatments. Imaging advances have created the potential for revolutionary gains in pre-¬asymptomatic diagnosis and treatment of a wide array of neuropsychiatric conditions, such as: Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, stroke, injuries, and brain cancers.

“At this symposium, attendees will gain an up-to-date and broad perspective about where the treatment of neurological disease is headed, uncover possible new business opportunities, and meet some of the major players making this happen in the Greater Boston area,” said Richard O’Brien, President of MDGBoston.

“Advances in brain research are generating significant entrepreneurial opportunities,” added Paul Hartung, President and CEO of Cognoptix, and a Director of MDGBoston. “This symposium will highlight new insights into the neurological disease process that are expected to stimulate the development of better diagnostics and new treatments.”

“We have a celebrated panel of researchers and clinicians who will address the current state of neuroscience, plus promising biopharma and device industry initiatives, and future prospects for the treatment of neurological disorders,” added David Pierson, Partner, Foley Hoag LLP and Moderator of the symposium.

Symposium Faculty will include: Bertha Madras, PhD, Harvard Medical School; Xue Han, PhD, Boston University; John Gabrieli, PhD, McGovern Institute for Brain Research, MIT; Miles Cunningham, MD, PhD, Harvard Medical School; and, Teo Dagi, MD, Harvard Medical School.
