m2p-labs Release: New EuroTransBio Project Targets Integral Platform for Micro Scale High-Throughput Bioprocess Development

Baesweiler, 9th December 2011 -- The German Biotech Company m2p-labs GmbH is proud to announce the launch of a newly funded EuroTransBio project. Together with European Biotech key-players, the company will develop an integrated platform for a high-throughput bioprocess development on a micro scale format during the next 3 years. The objective of the European project is to create a powerful bioprocess development tool combining latest technology in the field of miniaturised screening for up- and downstream process development with process design methodology in order to provide the European Biotech-Industry with a tool leading to better process understanding, shorter process development times as well as highly optimised and environmental friendly processes.

The different national and regional funding agencies provide a part of the 3 M€ Euro project volumes as funding via the EuroTransBio network. The EuroTransBio initiative targets on a stronger cooperation of European member states and regions in research projects. The goal is to foster economic and academic biotech players in sharing costs, risks, and skills related to innovation in order to develop in a more efficient way new products and technologies.

Carsten Müller, Managing Partner of m2p-labs and coordinator of the project is very grateful about the granted research project: “In this project we bring together excellent industrial and academic partners from whole Europe which complement one another in a perfect way”“. In the project Industrial companies from Spain (BioIngenium), the Netherlands (BAC BV, Synthon BV) and Belgium (Delphi Genetics S.A., Ablynx N.V.) are cooperating together with scientific partners from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Institute for Microtechniques Mainz (IMM).

”The project enables us to make a first step into the purification of proteins (downstream processing). We are now able to extend our competence in micro process engineering, automation and software development onto the HTS purification of proteins and as a final point to provide our customers with a fully integrated solution for the HTS development of whole bioprocesses”“, says Frank Kensy (Managing Director of m2p-labs GmbH). Jürgen Hubbuch (Professor at KIT) is also keen on the cooperation with the partners: „”We have now the possibility to expand our valuable 2 knowledge in methodology onto the area of micro fermentation as well as for crystallisation and concentration studies”“.

Main product of the German biotech company m2p-labs is the BioLector technology. Developed at the RWTH Aachen University, the system is a unique quantitative micro cultivation system which is applicable for clone screening as well as for the first steps in bioprocess development (e.g. media optimisation). The system can be used for microbial (aerobic/strict anaerobic) as well as mammalian cells and enables the users to measures biomass, pH, dissolved oxygen and fluorescence in 48 parallel reactors.

Company Profile m2p-labs GmbH:

The m2p-labs is the leading European biotech company in the area of micro bioreactors.

The company offers a unique quantitative micro cultivation system which is applicable for clone screening as well as for the first steps in bioprocess development (e.g. media optimisation). The system can be used for microbial (aerobic/strict anaerobic) as well as mammalian cells. Our product portfolio ranges from our main product (BioLector) and its disposables over automated solutions, up to a special passive fed-batch media.
